Louis, born in 1710, died in 1774.  He ruled as King of France from the age of 5 until his death.  At the beginning of his reign as a memeber of the house of Borubon he earnt himself the epithet of "The Beloved". However, due to terrible financial mismanagement and a reptutation for debauchery he ended his reign as quite possibly one of the least popular kings in whole of French history.

Used in France in royal premises from as early as 1460 firebacks were items of luxury often to the exclusively of royalty and aristocracy. Therefore it is common to see these early examples representing crests and crowns. Later the firebacks received more decorative designs about classical stories, nature and rural life.
